Boris Tadic says Serbia moved forward "dramatically" since Oct. 5, 2000 - "bearing in mind that democracy and democratic institutions were established then". The democracy is no longer being questioned, the Serbian president said while visiting an airport near the town of Kraljevo in central Serbia. Serbia moved forward dramatically, says president These events were a very democratic and civilizational achievement of the Serbian people, Tadic said. He noted that since these events, Serbia has completed cooperation with the the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and achieved significant progress in infrastructure through implementation of large infrastructure projects, among other things. October 5 is seen differently - some people are a bit unhappy, some are very disappointed, some had expected more, Tadic noted. However, democracy and democratic institutions were established then and never again Serbia will have to change through protests and risks, Tadic said. This does not mean that the ruling authorities will change in the next elections, he added jokingly. Nobody questions democracy in Serbia any more, Tadic said, recalling that Freedom House in its report said that Serbia was a free country. He said that Serbia must not give up its goals and has to go on. Serbia's main objectives are resolution of conflicts in the region, economic development and EU membership, Tadic pointed out. He told reporters in Kraljevo that he was personally disappointed by the fact that the system of values has not completely changed in all segments since October 5, 2000. Since October 5, we have been faced with familiar ailments of our society, and one of the main of those is putting personal interests above general ones, he said. The greatest disappointment is that we have not changed the system of values, but this is not possible in less than ten or eleven years, Tadic said. He said his expectations were that unemployment would be reduced, but that Serbia had to face the global economic crisis at the time. Tadic also called for constructive criticism, as criticism for its own sake results in destruction. No matter what, Serbia is has moved forward dramatically, Tadic concluded, recalling that before October 5, the public debt to GDP ratio stood at 105 percent and now amounts to 45 percent, and that the salaries increased from "40 to 400 euros".
