Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (SVM) leader Istvan Pastor says Serbia cannot get the EU candidate status until it changes the Law on Property Restitution. “Everybody should understand that the candidate status is at stake now. Serbia cannot become a candidate until it changes the law,“ he told Novi Sad-based Hungarian language daily Magyar Szo. “Serbia needs to change restitution law” According to him, Hungary is “very serious“ when it says that it would not support Serbia on its EU pathway if Serbia continues “to deprive Hungarian community“ of their rights. The SV announced earlier that it would launch an initiative before the Constitutional Court to assess constitutionality of certain provisions of the Law on Property Restitution and Compensation, which in their opinion represents confirmation of collective responsibility principles. “We are convinced that the law, by ignoring principles of individual responsibility, violates several regulations of the Constitution and that it is contrary to fundamental values of the EU,“ the party pointed out.
