Serbian parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic has called on citizens respect differences among people on October 2, during the Pride Parade in Belgrade. “Perhaps it would be best if those do not support the LGBT population and who do not think like us who accept these differences as our reality, found something else to do during the Pride Parade,” she told Tanjug. Speaker calls for respect of differences during Pride Parade She pointed out that, from the point of view of a lawmaker, it was hard for her to imagine that anyone could be denied of their rights guaranteed by law, and stemming from the Serbian Constitution, as well as the Law on the Ban of Discrimination. According to the parliament speaker, this means that the state should make it possible for every subpopulation to express and demonstrate its views freely. “Whether this is the time to do that, or maybe they should so it at some other occasion, it is not for me to decide, but I believe this population should be given the right to walk the streets of Belgrade. I have no doubts about that,” Djukic-Dejanovic stressed. She added that the security aspect should be taken into consideration as well, based on which it should be assesses whether the moment was right to hold the Pride Parade. “Should the gathering be assessed as highly risky, no reasonable person could say they are in favor of it being held,” the speaker underlined.
