Serbian Army (VS) Infantry Squad will take part in a UN peacekeeping mission in Cyprus. VS Chief of General Staff General Miloje Miletic and his associates saw off from the Nis military airport Friday morning VS members to Cyprus. Serbian troops to take part in Cyprus peacekeeping mission “This is the first independent VS squad that will perform tasks in the zone of a UN peacekeeping force, with their own armament and gear,” said Miletic, adding that the unit would join the Hungarian-Slovak contingent in Larnaca. The VS chief of General Staff said that the participation of the VS unit in the peacekeeping mission showed that Serbia was an active factor for the preservation of stability and security and that it was recognized as a serious partner at the international level. "This is a confirmation that VS members have been trained in accordance with the highest world standards," he stressed, adding that VS had contributed a lot to the development of capacities in the domain of defense and security. The members of the Serbian Defense Ministry and VS have been participating in the UN peacekeeping mission in Cyprus since 2010, and now, for the first time, an entire military unit from Serbia was sent to join the mission. The VS members successfully participate in five UN peacekeeping missions in Congo, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Cyprus and Lebanon, and the members of the Serbian police take part in peacekeeping missions in Liberia and Haiti. According to the report of the Serbian government on the participation of the Serbian military and police in UN peacekeeping missions in 2010, adopted on June 16, 2011, the VS members have performed these activities professionally and obtained the highest grades from the UN.
