A panel discussion was held as a part of the Serbia-EU Forum in Belgrade Friday. Aside from Serbian and EU officials, regional officials also took part in it. Turkish representative spoke about the experience of his country that applied for membership in the European economic zone back in 1959. Region “has no future without EU” “It took us 45 years to get a date for the beginning of the negotiations. We never gave up. The problems start once you start negotiating. However, European integrations are often frustrating. The best analogy for the EU is ‘do as I say, but don’t do it the way I do it’. So we need to stick to the Brussels recipe but not to the practice of today’s Europe. But the recipe is still the best,” Turkish European Integration Minister Egemen Bagis. “All of us here have a message for you. Once you get up there, don’t forget to send the elevator back,” he told Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Jandrokovic, whose country is closest to joining the EU. “I want to point out that Croatia does not intend to use any unsolved bilateral problems in order to stop progress of any country that is following our footsteps,” the Croatian foreign minister stated. The forum participants said that each country’s individual progress on the EU pathway was a joint success and that region did not have the future without the EU. “Let’s imagine that the EU does not exist tomorrow, its institutions, its market, its banks. Would we have fewer or more problems after its sudden disappearance, would we be able to give fewer or more chances to our children,” Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic wondered. “I am certain that the EU has a bright future and I am sure that all of us have a bright future in the EU,” Montenegrin Foreign Minister Milan Rocen replied. EU candidate countries said that Brussels should allow them to take part in the EU summits as well and that European leaders needed to understand that they had not only a common past but also a common future.
