EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule met on Thursday in Brussels with Serbian opposition SNS party leader Tomislav Nikolic. Beta news agency is reporting that Fule stated that "it is the known stand of the European Commission that the recognition of Kosovo is not a formal condition for the process of Serbia's European integration". "Kosovo recognition not condition for integration" The news agency added that Fule "stressed that political and economic conditions and the honoring of conditions in the process of stabilization and association, are key for the qualitative and objective assessment of Serbia's merits for member candidate status". Nikolic told reporters after the meeting that the EU had not changed its stand regarding the need for Serbia to very quickly fulfill all the criteria that would lead it to membership. The meeting with was organized at Nikolic's request. The SNS deputy leader stated on Wednesday that the SNS delegation would inform Fule that the party represented a policy that Serbia could neither renounce its institutions in northern Kosovo, nor its EU pathway.
