The Serbian government on Thursday in Belgrade decided to recognize the Republic of South Sudan. The new country declared independence on July 9, and on July 14 joined the United Nations as the world organization's 193th member. Serbia recognizes South Sudan South Sudan made the declaration of independence after organizing a referendum where 99 percent of its citizens voted in favor of separation from Sudan. The war between the rebels from the south and the Arab authorities in Khartoum started in 1955, a year before Sudan itself gained independence, and continued until 2005. The government media office also announced today that Serbia would establish diplomatic relations with another eastern African country - Eritrea.
