Serbian Defense Ministry and the Serbian Army (VS) members are likely to join the EU peacekeeping mission in Somalia as of September. Defense Ministry State Secretary Tanja Miscevic stated that after signing two agreements with the EU the only thing left was a technical agreement on the deployment of Serbian peacekeepers which was expected to be completed by early September. Serbian peacekeepers to join EU mission in September According to her, Serbia's peacekeeping troops are fully prepared for their first EU peacekeeping mission, and they will be deployed in Somalia immediately after signing the agreement with the EU i.e. by the end of the year at the latest. Miscevic told Belgrade-based daily Danas that according to the plans one Serbian officer would join the UN multinational operation in the Middle East by the end of the year, adding that the number of Serbia's peacekeepers in the current missions would be increased. “We are to finish the plan on the 2012 deployment of the members of the Serbian Defense Ministry and the VS by the end of the year and present it in the Serbian parliament early in 2012. At the moment, we are analyzing the needs of the missions in the world and determining our capacities,” Miscevic stressed. The Serbian Defense Ministry and VS members have so far been deployed in the UN missions in Liberia, Ivory Coast, Congo, Cyprus and Lebanon. (FoNet, file)
