U.S. Institute of Peace’s expert Daniel Serwer has stated he believes that partition of the Balkans is over. He added that he believed that this was the time of reintegration. Partition of Balkans is over, U.S. expert says At a conference marking the 10th anniversary of the Ohrid Agreement that ended an armed conflict with ethnic Albanians in 2001, Serwer said that everybody should focus on keeping the present structure of states in the Balkans. U.S. diplomat James Perdue, who was a facilitator in the negotiations between the Macedonian authorities and the Albanian rebels, also attended the conference. Pointing out that there had been four wars in the region, Perdue stressed that the fifth would have happened in Macedonia if the Ohrid Agreement had not been reached. Signatories of the agreement Social Democratic Alliance of Macedonia leader Branko Crvenkovski, former Democratic Party of Albanians leader Arben Xhaferi, then VMRO DPMNE leader Ljubco Georgievski and current Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski did not attend the two-day conference.
