After German FM Guido Westerwelle’s recent visit to Montenegro and warnings from the EU, the ruling party is considering reintroducing Serbian to schools. Podgorica-based daily Dan writes that it would most likely be proposed to make the Serbian and Montenegrin languages equal in the country’s education system, quoting ruling Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro (DPS) top officials. Daily: Authorities may reintroduce Serbian to schools According to the government, consultations are expected to begin next week which could lead to a “new political crisis at the state level” because the ruling coalition member Social Democratic Party led by Montenegrin parliament Speaker Ranko Krivokapic opposes the idea, the daily has reported. Dan claims that Podgorica has been warned by the EU that it needs to respect the language majority and that it must not quaify it as minority. The language issue is opposition's condition for continuation of negotiations on the election legislation.
