Visiting Montenegrin PM Igor Luksic said today he expected that the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro "would support the state and show more consideration". The consideration should extend to "its attitude toward the people of Montenegro, as well as the country's laws and economic interests", said Luksic. "Orthodox Church should show more consideration" During a news conference following the meeting with Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic, Luksic said that he expects the issue of the Orthodox Church to be resolved adequately, "just like relations with the Roman Catholic Church in Montenegro are regulated through agreements". Luksic qualified as positive the fact that he would confer with Patriarch Irinej of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) during his Wednesday visit to Serbia, adding that the relations between the Orthodox Church and the government in Montenegro would be discussed during the meeting. The Montenegrin PM said that he would let the patriarch take over the initiative for opening topics, adding that he would inform Irinej about Montenegro's stand on this matter. He underscored that he would always be willing to discuss topics relevant to the Orthodox Church in Montenegro. The only canonically recognized Orthodox Church in Montenegro is the SPC, as the Montenegrin Orthodox Church (CPC) failed to achieve such a status for itself. During a recent congress of the Milo Djukanovic-led ruling Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) a project was promoted, with the goal of creating a "united Orthodox Church in Montenegro".
