Budapest court will on Monday deliver a verdict to Sandor Kepiro who is accused of crimes in Novi Sad during World War II. Kepiro, 97, is accused of taking part in a fascist raid in 1942 as a Hungarian gendarmerie captain. The Simon Wiesenthal Center has stated that at least 1,246 people, mostly Jews, Serbs and Roma, were killed and thrown under the ice of the frozen Danube River. Some experts claim that 4,000 people were killed at the time. Kepiro was sentenced for the crime twice during and after WWII, but he escaped to Austria and later to Argentina where he lived until 1996 when he returned to Hungary. The Simon Wiesenthal Center discovered in 2006 that Kepiro lived in Budapest and that he had Hungarian pension.
