Hungary has sent a memorandum to the European Union member states, calling for a sustained policy of admitting countries of the Western Balkans as members. It is also urging the EU to grant candidate status to Serbia and set the date of negotiations on its EU membership by the end of this year, a statement said in Brussels on July 6, Beta reported. "Grant Serbia candidate status, negotiation date" In Hungary's Western Balkans Memorandum it was reiterated that, by arresting war crimes suspect Ratko Mladic, Serbia, as the key factor in the region, has made an important step toward membership in the Union. According to the document, which Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban delivered to his colleagues in the EU, the map of Europe must not have black holes, and this is why the European prospects of Kosovo must be strengthened. "We are aware that this task is especially difficult because not all EU members recognize Kosovo, but progress can be made by setting a roadmap and through dialogue on the abolishing of visas," the Hungarian prime minister added, stressing that the success of the talks between Belgrade and Pristina has great significance for lasting peace in the entire region. It was especially pointed out in the memorandum that Bosnia-Herzegovina must remain in the focus of the EU's attention, and that the time has come for an open discussion about the fact that the organization based on the Dayton agreement does not function according to expectations.
