Serbian officials are preparing to launch an initiative in the UN to make Serbia one of 18 countries in which Hague convicts would be able to serve sentences. The Serbian officials have been discussing the matter with the UN secretary general’s legal office, the Hague Tribunal and the UN Security Council, daily Vecernje novosti writes. Serbia to offer to take in Hague convicts In order for Serbia to become the 18th country that Hague convicts could serve their sentence in, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will have to repeal a 1993 decision according to which countries of former Yugoslavia are not fit to do so. He has confirmed that Serbia has been launching initiatives to become one of the countries in which people convicted in The Hague could serve sentences since 2006 but that there “have been no results so far.” The main reason for that was the fact that two Hague indictees, Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic, were still at large. The situation has recently changed, however, since Mladic was arrested. Hague Tribunal Spokeswoman Nerma Jelacic says that the court president decides where a person will serve their sentence.
