Italian FM Franco Frattini stated in Trieste on Friday that EU's doors were open to Serbia regarding obtaining the candidate status by the end of the year. “Following Ratko Mladic’s arrest, Serbia has made significant progress and the EU doors are open to Serbia and they should remain open as regards the country obtaining the EU candidate status by the end of the year,” Frattini told a news conference following the meeting of foreign ministers from member countries of the Central-European Initiative. Italian FM: EU doors open for Serbia When asked about his opinion on whether the date of EU accession talks should be set for Serbia, he said that he believed it should be done as soon as possible. “However, setting the date of talks depends on the technical fulfillment of the Copenhagen criteria,” the Italian minister pointed out. He assessed that Serbia was making progress and recalled that Serbia was prepared in advance to provide answers to questions from the European Commission questionnaire. Frattini also warned that the EU path of a country, in this case Serbia, should not be hindered by political motives. “The scenario that should be avoided is for political motives to hinder someone's EU path,” he said and added that opening of EU accession talks depended solely on the technical fulfillment of the criteria and not on political motives, and it should stay that way because otherwise the rules of game would change.
