About 1,400 dissatisfied workers of an arms manufacturing plant in central Serbia decided against holding their protest in Belgrade today. Earlier in the day Zastava Oruzje (Zastava Arms) workers headed toward the capital city from the town of Kragujevac in several dozen buses, but turned back as word reached them that their representatives and the government had struck a deal. Weapons factory workers accept govt. proposal According to reports, the agreement will see the government approve exports of arms that were previously put on hold, and will invest in new equipment. The so-called social program is also to be approved, that will cover 200 workers. Zastava Arms trade union leader Dragan Ilic told reporters that the government will also form a working group that will deal with the company's problems. The protesting workers were planning to gather in front of the government headquarters at 11 Nemanjina St. in Belgrade. The workers have been on strike for the past several weeks, asking for payment of overdue wages, and demanding that the management of the factory, which is part of the country's defense system, secures new contracts.
