Workers from a central-Serbian weapons plant, who have been on strike for two weeks, say they will move their protest to the capital city. Some 2,000 Zastava Oruzje (Zastava Arms) workers gathered in the town of Kragujevac on Monday and announced they would travel to Belgrade on Thursday. They are demanding payment of overdue April wages, and are urging the company's management to secure new contracts and provide them with work. When the protest started last month, the worker representatives met with government officials, but the talks soon fell through. The workers took over a weapons depot and the central ammunition storage facility. Union representative Dragan Ilic said today's gathering was a message to the government that the time was high for it to face the problems. "The government's refusal to continue negotiations is in fact another attempt to shut down the weapons production. We won't accept that," said he. The workers who gathered in Kragujevac today received the backing of Association of Independent Unions of Serbia President Ljubisav Orbovic, and demanded respect of their rights, resolution of conflicts through dialogue, and an end to the policy that brings job loss poverty. The protesters today invited former factory workers, as well as unemployed citizens, students, pensioners and all others who feel victimized by the transition to join them. The factory employs 2,150 people, but not all of them will travel to Belgrade - a group is set to remain at the weapons depot they took over two weeks ago. The protest in Kragujevac today (Beta)
