Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Adriano Martins called on the Serbian authorities to speed up economic reforms. He underlined that the cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) cannot make up for the reforms. "Hague cooperation cannot make up for reforms" At the first session of the Serbian Parliament of Enterprises (SPE) at the National Assembly, Martins said that the EU welcomes the arrest of ICTY indictee Ratko Mladic, which has accelerated the EU integration process, but underlined that the EU opinion regarding Serbia's candidate status would largely depend on concrete social and economic reforms. He underscored that there are no shortcuts to the EU, and that everything depends on successful, fruitful reforms. An impartial operation of courts, fight against corruption and crime, strengthening of independent regulatory bodies, as well as regulation of property issues and laws on restitution and public property continue to be the most pressing issues, Martins added. He also noted that the setting up of the SPE proves that Serbia is focused on the resolution of economic and business issues, which should improve the country's economic frame. In that context, Martins said that Serbia needs to provide macroeconomic stability and continue with reforming the domains of health care, education, pension system and the public sector. (Beta)
