All roads leading from the town of Pancevo to Belgrade have been blocked this morning by farmers protesting in their tractors. Some 1,200 tractors are being used for the purpose, B92's reporter said. Farmers block town, bridge in Novi Sad The farmers are letting through only police vehicles and ambulances. The only way to exit or enter Pancevo at the moment is by train, and via Kovin and Smederevo. The protest started on Monday, after the government announced it would slash subsidies for farming households. A group of farmers spent the night in front of the provincial government building in Novi Sad, determined not to leave until they had a chance to talk to officials. On Tuesday, they blocked traffic on Novi Sad's Varadin Bridge. Previously, the farmers warned they would block "the whole Vojvodina in order to achieve their rights". They want the subsidies given to registered households to remains the same as last year. The government planned the same amount of money - RSD 14,000 per hectare - but decided to reduce the size of subsidized land from 100 to 10 hectares. In a meeting in Belgrade last night with Ministry of Agriculture officials, representatives of farmers rejected an offer to have the figure increased to 30 hectares. At the same time, the ministry is saying that this is "the limit which the state budget can withstand". (Beta)
