Rasim Ljajic says the reason for the long and successful hiding of Ratko Mladic can be found in the fact that a very small number of people were involved. The president of the National Council for Cooperation with the Hague Tribunal spoke in Belgrade on Monday to say that "there had been no trade with Mladic's extradition", either at the internal political scene or regarding Serbia's European integration. "Not many helpers involved in hiding Mladic" According to Ljajic, the authorities were aware that extradition is an unpopular move that many people do not support. He added that Serbia "would probably become candidate for EU membership even it Mladic were not extradited". "We have arrested Mladic when we could, when we culd reachhim, and when we were sure we were following the trail that was valid and relevant," Ljajic said. Ljajic reiterated that while he was in hiding, Mladic stayed in three military facilities - Stragari, Rajac and Krcmar, near Valjevo, from where he was taken in 2002 to an apartment in Belgrade, where he remained until December 2005. In February 2006, he was transferred to the village Ljube near Sremska Mitrovica, and since then, we have managed to reconstruct his movements until the arrest, and we know at least three locations where he was hiding after 2006, Ljajic said. Asked whether Mladic is in some way connected with the murder of two soldiers in Topccder, Ljajic said that it was true that his security guards stayed at the barracks in Topcider, but not in the barracks where the murders were committed.
