Russian newspapers today report about Thursday's arrest of Ratko Mladic, stressing that Serbia had came closer to its desired goal to join the EU. Kommersant newspaper says that Mladic was apprehended at a right time, "because as soon as in a month, Serbia could have kissed its EU integration perspective goodbye". "Obstacle removed, new to be invented" The authorities understood that arresting the general - "which many consider a national hero" - would likely cause "serious dissatisfaction" among some, says the daily, and asserts that this would happen "most importantly, in the army". The article concludes that regardless of their "undefined" stance toward the Hague Tribunal, "most Serbs hardly wish to continue to be held hostage by some politicians and generals, and wish to draw the line under the past that is symbolized, among others, by Mladic". But other Russian papers gave a different slant to the story, with Komsomolskaya Pravda carrying a headline reading, "Hero of Serbia Mladic arrested in the homeland that he fought for". The daily says that the former military leader of Serbs in Bosnia led the armed struggle of ethnic Serbs in his ancient homeland, which was left outside of Serbia after the breakup of the former Yugoslavia. "Precisely that war made it possible for Serbs to have autonomy in Bosnia today," according to the newspaper. Nezavisimaya Gazeta had the headline "Ratko Mladic captured - Serbia seems to have removed last EU obstacle". The daily quoted political science expert Pavel Kandel who said that the arrest had great significance for Serbia. "The last formal hurdle on Serbia's road toward the EU has been removed. Clearly, new hurdles will now be invented, but that's another story," noted Kandel. General Ratko Mladic has been arrested, and Serbia came closer to joining the EU, wrote Moskovsky Komsomolec.
