Any compromise solution for Kosovo would have to come in a process where Serbia's negotiating platform was based on the Constitution, says Vuk Jeremic. "There is only one official state position, which I, as foreign minister, represent abroad, and that is that Kosovo is an integral part of Serbia, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1244," said the minister. "Solution for Kosovo only in line with Constitution" He was responding to an observation made by Belgrade's Vecernje Novosti daily reporter, who noted that lately different signals have been coming from the top state echelon when it comes to Kosovo. Ethnic Albanians in Kosovo in February 2008 unilaterally declared independence, but Serbia rejected the proclamation, with the country's Constitution stating in its preamble that Kosovo is an integral part of the state. Deputy PM Ivica Dacic, however, has recently repeatedly made statements where he advocates a partition - referring to it as "separation" - of the southern province, while President Boris Tadic mentioned "the two Germanys model". "We are prepared to search for a compromise solution through a process where our negotiating platform is based on the Serbian Constitution and parliament's binding resolutions," said Jeremic. According to him, the country's foreign policy is based on regional cooperation, reconciliation and building of a "European society". "At the same time, the only official position when it comes to Kosovo is that the province is a part of Serbia," he explained. Asked whether Serbia would manage to "do everything it should" before the EC makes its decision on the candidate status bid, Jeremic said that "we will continue to do all we can to make sure it happens in time". "It remains to be seen if this will be enough. Building a society based on European standards is very important to us, and we will continue to do the best we can," concluded the minister.
