Head of the International Civilian Office in Pristina Pieter Feith has said that the EU mission in Kosovo, EULEX, "is not active enough in the north". According to reports in Albanian language newspapers in Pristina, he also underlined that he had "expected more from that mission". Feith criticizes EULEX performance in north "I am really of the opinion that EULEX ought to be more active in the north of Kosovo, as well as that it should launch actions against certain local criminals," Feith was quoted as telling daily Zeri. The north of Kosovo is inhabited predominantly by Serbs, who refuse to accept the authority of the government in Pristina, having first rejected the ethnic Albanian unilateral declaration of independence made over three years ago. As of this month, Feith will no longer perform his parallel role in Kosovo - that of the EU special representative. The daily states that "since he has lost one of his offices", Feith "keeps leveling criticism at EULEX". The Dutchman also voiced surprise over the dismissal of Kosovo central bank governor Hasim Redzepi, "since it is still unclear what charges are, why he has spent four months in investigative detention, and why the information has been kept secret for six months". Feith said that certain officials of the Kosovo government and EULEX were "undermining his authority as an international civilian representative", adding that these obstacles were "absolutely unbelievable", according to the newspaper. Feith expressed hope that Kosovos' "internationally supervised independence will end next year", and that the ongoing dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade "will resolve a number of specific issues".
