Serbia's Deputy PM for European Integration Bozidar Djelic says Serbia will do everything to protect the visa-free travel regime. He told B92 in Belgrade on Monday that Serbia will also ask EU member countries for more concrete cooperation and information on the fake asylum seekers, so that the problem could be resolved as soon as possible. "EU should send information on asylum seekers" "We will do our part, but we expect the Schengen Area to give us the information so that we can act," Djelic said, pointing out that one of the big problems is that the countries complaining of a large number of asylum requests do not want to share the applicants' names and passport numbers. As one of the measures aimed at preventing the suspension of visa liberalization, Djelic announced possible changes to the law in order to clearly define organizing illegal migration as a crime. "We will work on this, so that those who abuse the Schengen Area and the principle of asylum can no longer travel freely. Also, the police will try to make sure no more fake passports are issued," Djelic stated. According to him, the situation with fake asylum seekers from Serbia in the EU is serious, but not dramatic. Noting that their numbers are decreasing, but that is still not enough, Djelic reminded that the number of asylum requests rose last year, after which it went down. It started growing again in recent months in some countries like Luxembourg, while it dropped 36 percent in Belgium and 40 percent in Germany. "The situation is not dramatic, but it is serious, because we have a country which is one of the founding members of the EU and which has asked Serbia to consider ways to reduce the number of asylum seekers, and, if Serbia is unable to accomplish this, visas could be reinstated," said the deputy prime minister.
