The number of asylum-seekers in Serbia has been on the rise ever since 2008, a news conference was told on Monday in Belgrade. Their number could exceed 2,000 by the end of the year, Radomir Djurovic of the Center for Protection and Assistance to Asylum-seekers stated. Number of asylum-seekers growing He also noted that only five individuals have been granted asylum so far. During a press conference in Tanjug Press Club, Djurovic said that 52 persons in Serbia sought asylum in 2008, and the number of asylum applications increased five times in 2009, while as many as 522 individuals applied for asylum in 2010. “The increase tendency continued in 2011. In just four months, by April 22, we received 579 applications, which is more than in the previous year,” Djurovic said and said that he expects the number to continue increasing over the next few years. He pointed out that Serbia is a transit country in which asylum-seekers stay only a month or two. Djurovic noted that applications for asylum in Serbia are mostly submitted by Afghanis, Palestinians, Pakistani, Iranians and Tunisians, and pointed out that Serbia's asylum system is functioning well for now. However, he said that accommodation capacities constitute a problem. He believes that competent bodies should provide additional accommodation facilities with at least 100 beds each, having in mind the increasing number of asylum-seekers which represents a consequence of the difficult asylum situation in the regional countries, primarily in Greece.
