The tense situation was defused by deputy SNS leader Aleksandar Vucic, who appealed on those gathered to hold a protest without causing incidents, saying, "I will never command over violence". The protest came as party leader Tomislav Nikolic has been on a hunger strike, trying to force the authorities to call early elections in the country. SNS Belgrade branch chairman Nebojsa Stefanovic told reporters that the citizens had gathered "in order to show the energy with which we are demanding elections". He also said that the rally was sending out a message that Serbian President and ruling DS party leader Boris Tadic was "one of the persons most responsible for the crisis in the country". Crowds of between 500 and 1,000 SNS supporters late on Monday also protested in other Serbian towns, including in Kraljevo, Krusevac, and Nis.
