Top Vietnamese official in visit to Serbia

Vietnamese Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem has met in Belgrade with the Serbian Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Dragoljub Mićunović.

Vietnamese Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem has met in Belgrade with the Serbian Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Dragoljub Micunovic. The visiting Vietnamese official said that his country supports Serbia in the preservation of its territorial integrity and sovereignty, in accordance with the Resolution 1244 of the UN Security Council on Kosovo. Gia Khiem presented his host with the economic reforms carried out in Vietnam, which resulted in a considerable economic growth in the past several years, adding that Vietnam is interested in strengthening economic cooperation with Serbia and the signing of an agreement on economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. The officials assessed that Serbia and Vietnam have been linked by traditional friendship and good political relations, adding that their economic cooperation is below the possibilities offered by their respective economies. Micunovic pointed to the significance of strengthening the parliamentary cooperation between Serbia and Vietnam, and assessed that the forming of parliamentary friendship groups would contribute to the the strengthening of cooperation. The officials also agreed that more frequent contacts and high-level visits, as well as opening of embassies, would contribute to the strengthening and improvement of overall cooperation between Serbia and Vietnam, the statement reads. On Sunday, Pham Gia Khiem met with his Serbian counterpart Vuk Jeremic, when the two officials agreed there was a lot of potential for expanding bilateral cooperation in different areas. Jeremic said that he is grateful for the Asian country's principled support in not recognizing Kosovo's unilaterally declared independence. "The history of our relations is a history of mutual support and understanding," Jeremic said and added that today's visit strengthened the already excellent relations between the two countries. We discussed opportunities in economy, culture and defense, Jeremic said. Gia Khiem, the first Vietnamese foreign minister to visit Serbia, said that his country can export more agricultural products to Serbia. "We want to increase the number of mutual high-level visits," he said. The two ministers also discussed the upcoming conference of the Non-Allied Movement in Belgrade, which will also include a Vietnamese delegation.
