An opposition official says a new deadline for Telekom Austria to improve its Telekom Srbija bid shows that the Serbian government is in a desperate situation. “The government which asserted that the minimum price of 51 percent of Telekom shares is EUR 1.4bn and that lower bids will not be considered is now begging the buyer to improve its bid of EUR 950mn," Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) Deputy President Nenad Popovic said in a written statement. Opposition says Telekom sale turned "desperate" "The fact that the government is selling the most profitable state company as if in a flea market just because it needs funds to finance the election campaign is, to put it mildly, very sad,” he noted. Popovic underlined that it is also regrettable that the government is turning a blind eye to the protests of experts, opposition, citizens and Telekom unions, and all those who signed the DSS petition against the sale of the state-owned telecommunications company. The opposition party also called on the Serbian parliament to urgently open a discussion on the sale "so that the government representatives could explain to MPs and the people why they are giving away this company and who is responsible for the international humiliation in regarding the Telekom tender".
