The public in Serbia is being held hostage to opposition SNS party leader Tomislav Nikolic's "fixation" that elections should be held on December 18. This is according to an official of the ruling Democratic Party (DS). "Public hostage to Nikolic's election date fixation" Deputy party president Jelena Trivan told the daily Politika that the current parliamentary majority is "in no way jeopardized", and that "there are no reasons to hold early elections". She went on to tell the newspaper that while dates for early elections are being mentioned, "nobody is wondering when and why elections are called in the first place". "When we start from there then we can define both what needs to be discussed with the opposition and how to harmonize so that our behavior in no way jeopardizes EU integrations," said Trivan. Trivan said that she would like for the discussion about the elections to remain within reasonable limits, and stressed that "if anyone decides to take the state's business into their own hands, this, by definition, poses a threat to the legal order." Trivan believes that SNS is issuing a threat by saying that they will call elections on their own. According to her, the ruling coalition is now more than ever willing to discuss all crucial issues with the opposition.
