The government will continue to pay for the harmful energy agreement with Russia at citizens’ expense, says Liberal Democratic Leader (LDP) Cedomir Jovanovic. According to him, the government is planning on doing it by increasing the excise taxes. LDP leader criticizes fuel excise taxes He pointed out that the government still did not dare to admit that to the public. “The government doesn’t dare admit to the public that it intends to continue to pay for their incompetence and harmful energy agreement with Russia at our expense by raising excise taxes on domestic gas and diesel fuel,” Jovanovic pointed out. According to him, the increase in the excise taxes on domestic gas and diesel fuel will only formally fulfill European Commission’s request and Serbian citizens will only end up paying more for the fuel. He explained that the state would this way “rob” the citizens and the economy of more than EUR 80mn by the end of the year. The LDP leader pointed out that “Serbia needs a change and it is the only way out of the labyrinth of decline and cheating”. “According to information from the market, 600 million liters of gas and more than 950 million liters of diesel is used in Serbia every year, and every day of maintaining the excise taxes, which are by RSD 10 higher than in Romania, Bulgaria or Macedonia, will cost the citizens more than EUR 200,000,” he stressed. The LDP leader added that Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic’s government had been refusing to accept LDP’s draft law on the excise tax which envisaged returning the excise taxes on fuel to a level before January 1, 2011.
