Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic told a parliamentary committee in Belgrade on Tuesday that Serbia has a "balanced and independent foreign policy". He underlined that Belgrade's goal by the end of the year is to win EU candidate status in October and get a date for the beginning of the EU accession talks. FM: Balanced foreign policy, EU - goals for 2011 “The priorities of Serbia's foreign policy are the EU integration process, defense of the country's sovereignty and integrity, regional cooperation and economic diplomacy,” Jeremic said while presenting the report on work of the Foreign Ministry to the Serbian parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs. As for the EU integration process, the foreign minister underlined that the current government has made the greatest results since the democratic changes that took place on October 5, 2000. Commenting the report by Council of Europe (CoE) Rapporteur Dick Marty on illegal human organ trafficking in Kosovo, Jeremic stated that several months ago Serbia has launched consultations with all members of the UN Security Council on initiative for the formation of an independent investigative body under the UN mandate. “Consultations have been opened several months ago with all members of the UN Security Council, particularly Russia. We expect that this issue will be formally launched soon,” Jeremic said. Recalling that Serbia is faced with the challenges that rarely any country has, Jeremic called the parliament to unity given the difficult situation in Europe, primarily the economic crisis which could jeopardize the EU enlargement process. “We would use greater unity in this situation, and I would like to urge the parliament that all political divisions should be surpassed regarding foreign policy and state priorities as we should all act as one,” the minister underlined. Jeremic announced that the ministerial conference of the Non-Aligned Movement will be held in Belgrade on September 5-6. Vuk Jeremic attends the committee's session (Beta)
