Mladjan Dinkic says that a year after the initiative for Serbia's decentralization was presented, there are no clear answers from the ruling coalition partners. The initiative was launched by his United Regions of Serbia (URS). "No clear answer on decentralization" Dinkic was until recently economy minister in the current Serbian government, and also heads G17 Plus party, which is part of the ruling coalition. Pointing out that the initiative does not require changes in the Constitution but rather only the parliamentary majority, Dinkic said that those who reject the initiative will show that "they support decentralization only verbally, whereas that they are actually protecting the grotesque political system in which party headquarters dominate." In an interview for the Monday issue of the Belgrade-based daily Blic, Dinkic said that "URS will not be a part of the government at all costs." "At the local level, we will give full freedom to our boards to independently choose their partners. At the republic level, our long-term partner is the Democratic Party (DS), if they truly honor and implement the ideas and principles of (former PM Zoran) Djindjic," Dinkic stressed. He reiterated that the first government of Vojislav Kostunica did a better job in the area of economy than did the last two governments, but that it failed in the field of foreign affairs, which resulted in the halting of the EU integration. URS leader believes that the obtaining of the EU membership candidacy is not enough for the ruling coalition to stand for elections. "The EU candidacy is important for the future of Serbia and its citizens, and as far as election results are concerned, it will matter who did what for the citizens. Employment must become a national number one priority," Dinkic underscored. Mladjan Dinkic (FoNet, file)
