Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic said on Thursday that Serbia had to resolve the restitution issue if its goal was to become a candidate for EU membership. The same condition went for the country's ambition to begin negotiations on joining this European organization, he explained. "Serbia must resolve restitution issue" Djelic stated that models for natural and financial restitution of the expropriated property should soon be considered, announcing that he would support the adoption of the related law in the Serbian parliament in June. The property in question was taken from owners by the communist Yugoslav authorities after the Second World War. At a panel discussion held at Belgrade's Faculty of Economy, Finance and Administration, Djelic pointed out that the historical injustice should be corrected, but in such a way that the state does not create a new injustice and instability through unsustainable pressure on public finances. Djelic said that the state should draft new law on public property, stressing that Serbia cannot develop without regulated legal and property relations. Bozidar Djelic (Beta, file)
