The African Group has sent a protest note to Serbia over statements heard last week from the leader of the Liberal-Democratic Party (LDP), Cedomir Jovanovic. Criticizing the country's policy on the conflict in Libya, Jovanovic addressed Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic and said that instead of "traveling to cannibals in Africa", he should "react to the plight of civilians in Libya". Protest note over LDP leader's "cannibal" remark For this, Algerian Ambassador in Belgrade and representative of the African Group Abdelkader Mesdoua sent a strongly worded demarche to Vuk Jeremic, on behalf of African and Arab countries. The Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement in Belgrade today that Jeremic had apologized for the incident and on behalf of the government sent assurances that the statement did not represent the country's "official stance". "Jeremic also stressed that leadership of relevant institutions will be informed about the content of the demarche," said the MFA statement. The protest note said that while Jovanovic made his statement about African nations and states, referring to them as "cannibals", it went without any reaction from the presidency, the government, political parties, and even organizations and a commission which was set up to fight racial discrimination. "The statements from the leader of this party, who is also a member of parliament, are serious, racist and offensive to those states and nations which, despite strong pressures, wholeheartedly supported Serbia as it defended its territorial integrity, and decided to maintain relations marked by friendship and solidarity," the protest note, made public by the Serbian MFA, further said. The demarche noted that the African Group strongly condemned the verbal incident and wished to see the Serbian government, parliament and other institutions react and also condemn the statement, which "jeopardized a consolidation of relations that have been patiently nurtured during the past years". The protest note concludes that the African Group "has a right to ask the author of these statements to withdraw them and apologize in a similar manner, in parliament".
