UNMIK Chief Lamberto Zannier says once Belgrade and Pristina have agreed on technical issues, recognition of Kosovo’s independence “will be less problematic”. He told daily Politika that by this he meant “the issue of recognition”. UNMIK chief: Technical issues first “It is important to approach the problem in such a way that it does not affect regional and international cooperation, and relations between Serbia and the countries that have recognized the independence,” the UNMIK chief stressed. He has also assessed that the “issue of northern Kosovo is very difficult” because “Pristina considers it its internal issue and is not ready to put it on the dialogue’s agenda as such”. “That’s one more issue in which only a pragmatic approach can work. There are many open ‘technical issues’ regarding the north,” Zannier pointed out. “We should begin with those issues and then assess how much progress in this field could contribute to solving of bigger political issues,” he was quoted as saying. The UNMIK chief stressed that “UNMIK closely cooperates with the EU on preparation of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue.” “We are involved in discussions about the format of the meetings, but we remain ready to participate based on the achieved agreement of the two sides and the mediator. The UN has, on its part, made it clear to the EU that the mission is available to attend,” Zannier concluded. Lamberto Zannier
