By refusing to participate at the business forum in Baltimore, Serbia sent the wrong message, says a U.S. State Department official. Serbia showed that it puts politics ahead of the economy, said Deputy Assistant Secretary with the U.S. State Department Thomas Countryman. "Serbia is sending wrong message" In the second half of March, Baltimore (Maryland) will host a conference of government and business leaders from South and Central Europe, to which Kosovo was invited. "We were disappointed by this, considering our efforts to build economic and business ties with Serbia, in line with what U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden said in Belgrade two years ago," Countryman said late Monday. "By discouraging its businessmen from meeting with several hundred investors and businessmen from the U.S. and the region, Serbia is sending the wrong message that it puts politics before the economy," he added. As for the Belgrade-Pristina talks in Brussels, which he will attend as a guest, Countryman said the issue of Kosovo's status "can be touched on but not changed". The question can be discussed but not changed, said he, "because for the U.S. the issue of status has been decided". The U.S. official also stated that "the importance of the dialogue is being overestimated in Kosovo and Serbia", adding that the Brussels meetings were "not negotiations, but only a dialogue".
