“Serbia could get candidate status in October”

The Justice Ministry is satisfied with the first visit of the European Commission expert mission which analyzed the work of the Serbian police and judiciary. “If there are some ambiguities the EC can send additional questions in the next month or two,” Justice Ministry State Secretary Slobodan Homen said. “Serbia could get candidate status in October” He explained that the EC would announce its final position on harmonization of the domestic legal system with the EU standards on October 12 and that the EC would then decide whether Serbia had fulfilled all requirements necessary for the EU candidate status. Homen pointed out that the EC expert mission had been checking Serbia’s answers to the EC questionnaire and added that that he expected two more expert missions which would inspect the work of the independent institutions and respect of human rights. “If it turns out that Serbia has fulfilled the largest number of conditions for the candidate status, there is a big chance that we will get the EU candidate status and a date for the beginning of accession negotiations in October,” the state secretary stressed. According to him, once Serbia has received the EU candidate status its citizens’ living standard will improve, which is the essence of the EU accession. He also added that Serbia would have access to EU accession funds and that the current aid of EUR 200mn a year would be significantly increased. Homen said that the expert mission had inspected whether Serbia had a legal framework in accordance with the European standards in terms of the Constitution, laws and their implementation. “On the other hand, they were very thorough, they even did studies of individual cases by monitoring a specific criminal proceeding from the very beginning – from police, investigation to its completion in court,” the state secretary pointed out. Homen added that police and judiciary were the most complicated areas in the EU integration because they dealt with human rights, security and judicial work.
