Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic has stated that visa liberalization is not at risk at the moment. He told a press conference that about 10,000 Serbian citizens had requested an asylum in the EU member states last year. “EU visa liberalization not at risk” More than 4,000 of them were returned to Serbia in accordance with the Readmission Agreement with the EU. “Serbia is ready to face all the challenges of the visa liberalization, both positive and negative ones,” the minister said and added that about 100 citizens of other countries requested asylum in Serbia each year. He said that various measures had been taken in order to prevent abuse of the visa liberalization, including public actions, stricter border control and that the authorities were going to check whether there was an organized abuse of the visa liberalization. Dacic has called on the EU member states to revise their regulations which help increase the number of asylum requests. He pointed out that majority of asylum seekers from Serbia were Roma and Albanians and that other ethnicities rarely requested asylum in the EU. Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert said that a lot had been done in order to ensure border control and prevent abuse of the visa liberalization. “We expect further cooperation, stricter exit control on borders and that the EU countries will step up their control, primarily Hungary and Slovenia that are first in line,” he stressed.
