Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said Wednesday that the police would protect the reporters of the B92 program Insajder. Dacic says that it is impermissible in Serbia that anyone threatens anyone and that the police will investigate the posters pasted around the town of Lazarevac after the Insajder episodes on abuse at the Kolubara Coal Mines were aired. Minister: We will protect reporters Asked to comment on the posters and the threats received by Insajder journalists, the interior minister said that the police did not know who was behind them, but would investigate the matter. He repeated that he had discussed the protection of journalists with professional associations on several occasion since becoming interior minister. The posters threatening B92 employees and the Insajder authors first appeared two weeks ago in Lazarevac. OSCE Media Freedom Representative Dunja Mijatovic has condemned the intimidation campaign against B92 and assessed that it is a direct attack on serious attack on the democratic values of the country. “I am very concerned about this public attack against B92 and its journalists. Authors of the Insajder program have been for a long time facing large-scale intimidation and attempts to silence their critical voices. This reaction to a TV program, apart from being distasteful, is a serious attack on the democratic values of the country,” she said. Mijatovic welcomed the pledge of the interior minister to protect the B92 journalists. “Instances of intimidation of media are direct attempts to undermine democracy itself and need to be met with immediate condemnation. I hope that the authorities of Serbia will do their utmost to promote a safe working environment for journalists,” the OSCE media freedom representative pointed out.
