An exhibition opened on Monday in Kragujevac, central Serbia, of the editions of historic editions of the country's constitutions. The Constitutions of the Principality and Kingdom of Serbia exhibition is part of the Statehood Day - February 15 - ceremonies, and was opened by Parliament Deputy Speaker Gordana Comic at the National Museum in Kragujevac. Exhibition shows Serbia's constitutions "This is a big day for a small country, but a country of great people - kindhearted, strong, smart and sometimes temperamental, with an eventful history full of suffering, but also the right to be proud of their history," Comic said relaying a message from parliament speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, who was unable to attend. She stressed that the Constitution adopted in 1835 marked the start of the history of modern Serbia - which came after the nation's medieval kingdom and empire, and the Ottoman Turk invasion and occupation. Comic added that six original Constitutions of the Principality and Kingdom of Serbia are available for public viewing thanks to the state archives. Kragujevac Mayor Veroljub Stevanovic said that the exhibit has a symbolic importance, in addition to its cultural significance. "February 15, Serbian Statehood Day, is celebrated in memory of two important dates in our history - the start of the First Serbian Uprising, which opened the door to liberty after centuries spent in slavery, and the day when the Constitution was adopted at the old church in Kragujevac, then capital of Serbia, in 1835," he said. The original constitutions will be on display until February 22. The 1835 Constitution (Beta)
