South Sudan's rural development and cooperation minister was shot dead today only two days after results of an independence referendum had been announced. The minister was killed inside the ministry's headquarters, Reuters has reported. South Sudan minister shot dead "The minister for rural development and cooperation has been killed by a driver working at the ministry. He also killed a guard at the door of the ministry then shot himself," South Sudan's army spokesman Philip Aguer said. The referendum on independence, which was held from January 9 until January 16, was envisaged by a 2005 peace treaty which ended a decade-long war between the Muslim north and Christian south. According to the official results, 99 percent of the voters voted in favor of South Sudan’s independence. Sudan’s President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has stated that he will respect the citizens’ choice and accept South Sudan’s secession. The world’s newest nation will officially declare its independence on July 9.
