Of all heating plants in Serbia, only one, that in the town of Bor, is supplied directly from the Kolubara mines. All others, including those in Belgrade, buy coal via mediators, TV B92 investigative program Insajder (Insider) has discovered. Private companies made money reselling coal This means that private companies collect profit from the deals, the program has revealed. Kolubara is a part of the Serbian state-owned power company EPS, while one of the middlemen in the coal sale has for years been one of the members of the EPS board of directors. On the other hand, Slobodan Djeric, who headed the mines from 2001 until 2004, tried to put an end to the practice and impose the company as the direct supplier for the heating plants in Belgrade, the show's viewers will learn. This materialized only for one year, in 2003, while Djeric was sacked the following year. Meantime Belgrade daily Blic is reporting that more than 100 people are "being checked" in connection to allegations of misuses at Kolubara, among them management. Also under scrutiny, according to this, are owners of private companies that rented out machinery and bought coal from Kolubara in order to sell it with profit.
