Of a total of 1,804 schools in Serbia, there were no classes held in 100 education institutions. 872 schools worked full time, while in 821 schools classes were cut to 30 minutes on Monday, the Serbian Education Ministry told Tanjug on the same day. Some schools strike, all unions in protest Schools who are members of the Serbian Education Union (SOS), which preliminarily accepted an agreement with the government on the increase of salaries, payment of severance pays and awards, continued their strike on Monday, waiting for the protocol to be approved by the republic committee of that organization. Leaders of the Association of teachers' trade unions of Serbia and the education workers' union Nezavisnost (Independence) urged their members Sunday to continue their protest and refuse to accept the Protocol, while the Union of Education Workers of Serbia (SRPS) has given contradictory statements. SRPS President Slobodan Brakovic told Tanjug that the republic committee of the union had decided to annul the signature of the government's protocol and that the decision to go on strike remained in force. However, according to a release of the union signed by its Secretary-General Hadzi Zdravko M. Kovac, the SRPS republic committee unanimously decided at the Sunday meeting that schools would start working normally and strike ended on Monday. Last week, half of the schools worked part time, one fourth of the 1,804 educational institutions worked normally, while a quarter of them did not work at all. (Tanjug)
