Hungarian FM Janos Martonyi has said that his country will do everything it can to assist Serbia and other countries in the region to get closer to the Union. Hungary assumed the rotating six-month European Union presidency on January 1. "Hungary will help Serbia approach EU" In an interview for the Wednesday edition of the Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti, Martonyi said that Budapest would assist not only in the answers to the European Commission questionnaire, but in everything else as well. He expressed satisfaction over the status which the Hungarian minority enjoyed in Serbia and underlined that the present relations between Hungary and Serbia are really good. At the same time, Martonyi said he expects that the claims which Council of Europe Rapporteur Dick Marty put forward in his report about organ trafficking in Kosovo would be investigated by the court, but pointed out that he does not expect that would affect the start of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue. The two issues are not linked, and I think that that the time has finally come for the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina to begin, he added. Speaking about the status of the Serb minority in Hungary, Martonyi said that Budapest paid great attention to all minorities, and voiced satisfaction over the fact that Serbia has adopted a law on the establishment of national minority councils. "I think that the situation in Serbia is more positive than in other country in the region when it comes to the setting up of such councils," he added.
