Electronic monitoring of offenders will save EUR 8.76mn each year, State Secretary at the Ministry of Justice Slobodan Homen told Tanjug on Sunday. Every day, 15 euros is allocated from the Serbian budget for each person in custody or prison, whereas offenders using electronic bracelets in home custody will cost EUR 7 per day, Homen underlined. Electronic tagging "will save money" “Eight euros will be saved per day on each of about 3,000 prisoners sentenced to up to one year in prison. I believe that this will be a great saving at the annual level,” the state secretary said. He also pointed out that introduction of harsher punishment policy in Serbia and adoption of new law in the course of the justice system reform increased the number of prisoners by 4,000 in the last few years, and as a result Serbia today has about 11,500 prisoners. The electronic monitoring will be realized from a command center, which is to be located in the Ministry of Justice, and will be applied to all persons sentenced to up to one year in prison doing their time in home custody. The electronic monitoring will also include rapists, multiple offenders and family violence offenders. slobodan Homen (FoNet, file)
