The non-aligned countries will again gather in Belgrade after 20 years. The last meeting of the non-aligned leaders in Belgrade was held in 1989. Foreign ministers of the non-aligned countries will celebrate the movement’s 50th anniversary in September of 2011. The Non-Aligned Movement Coordinating Bureau decided at the meeting in New York that the jubilee will be celebrated in Belgrade and Jakarta. According to the announcements, the official participants of the meeting will be foreign ministers of the countries that presided over the Non-Aligned Movement between the summits, since the first one which was held in Belgrade in 1961 until the last one held in Sharm el-Sheikh in 2009. Egyptian FM will preside over the meeting since Egypt currently presides over the Non-Aligned Movement. The announcement points out that all other members and observers are welcome to attend the meeting in Belgrade. Consensus among the non-aligned countries regarding the meeting in Belgrade was reached after more than a year. “Not everybody was enthusiastic about the idea, partly because of the fact that Serbia is no longer a member of the movement and partly because of concern that Belgrade wants to use the meeting to promote its policy on Kosovo. The atmosphere, however, changed after Serbia and EU’s joint resolution which was adopted by the UN General Assembly,” daily Politika writes. The Non-Aligned Movement explained that holding of the meeting in a country which was no longer non-aligned was not a tribute to the country but to the city in which the movement had promoted its mission and ideas for the first time. Serbia made a proposal to host the 50th anniversary celebration in Belgrade a year ago, stressing that it was the most appropriate place bearing in mind that the first summit was held there.
