Serbia's Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic will attend the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo, it was announced late on Thursday. Reports this week said that Serbia would boycott the ceremony due to its ties with China. Ombudsman in Oslo "after talking to FM" PM Mirko Cvetkovic's cabinet then said in a statement last night that Jankovic would go to Norway in order to "meet expectations of a large part of the political and widest possible public in Serbia". But Jankovic says that "once he realized Serbia would not be represented", he "addressed the foreign minister (Vuk Jeremic) with a request to travel to Oslo on behalf of Serbia as an independent organ who deals with citizens' rights protection". "I neither ask, nor receive orders from the government, so I did not need any permission. But considering that one has to reach Oslo, this was impossible to do. Tonight (Thursday evening) I was given government transport services and I was asked to - since I was going there anyway - relay our head of government's personal congratulations to the Nobel prize winner," said Jankovic.
