"Don't boycott Nobel Prize ceremony"

Lawyers’ Committee for Human Rights (YUCOM) has called upon the state to change its decision to boycott this year’s Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. In an open letter to the authorities, YUCOM has asked the government to send its representative to Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo which will honor Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo. "Don't boycott Nobel Prize ceremony" They also asked the government “to explain to the public what kind of policy we are leading”. “By trying to boycott this year’s ceremony Serbia is once again confirming that it is far from a sincere fight for respect of human rights and all those values which are typical for a modern, European, democratic society,” the open letter reads. According to YUCOM’s assessment, “after the horror of the 90’s Serbia should show that it is the first that will stand by those whose rights are violated and who are risking their lives for the sake of the world peace”. The letter also adds that “Serbia needs a true policy of respect for human rights and not a policy which cares more about a bridge than about a human life”. “At the same time we request from Serbia to ask China to release Nobel Prize winner’s family members from house arrest and take the path of respect for human rights,” it is said in the YUCOM letter. Serbia is one of 19 countries which will boycott this year’s ceremony of Nobel Peace Prize which will be awarded to the Chinese dissident. Daily Blic writes that Serbia is returning a favor to China which boycotted Nobel Peace Prize ceremony for Martti Ahtisaari in 2008. Nobel Peace Prize Winner Liu Xiaobo Writers’ Forum condemns Foreign Ministry’s decision The Writers’ Forum has also condemned the Foreign Ministry’s decision to boycott Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. “We strongly protest against shameful decision of the Serbian Foreign Ministry which has, at China’s request, instructed diplomatic representatives in Oslo not to attend Nobel Peace Prize ceremony which will this year be awarded to Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo,” the announcement points out. “With such a humiliating decision Serbian authorities are siding with a group of world governments and states in which human rights are being restricted and violated the most,” the Writers’ Forum stressed. Members of the Writers’ Forum and signatories of the announcement, who have expressed their sincere solidarity with the Chinese writer and dissident, are Filip David, Sasa Ilic, Mirko Djordjevic, Mirjana Miocinovic, Nenad Prokic, Predrag Cudic, Ibrahim Hadzic, Milan Djordjevic, Milica Jovanovic, Irena Javorski, Srdan Srdic, Borivoje Adasevic, Dragoljub Stankovic, Vladimir Arsenic, Milos Zivanovic and Tomislav Markovic.
