Serbian President Boris Tadic said Friday that security of citizens, armed forces and defense system was the main state priority. At a ceremony marking the Military Security Agency (VBA) Day, he expressed support to the reform carried out in the VBA and in the defense system. Tadic: Security of citizens top priority He pointed out the importance of the VBA for the entire national security system. “Security challenges increase in conditions of global economic and financial crises,” the president said. “In the past decade, Serbia was not able to equip its army and VBA according to world technological progress and the current challenges,” he explained. “This was also due to the global recession which hit Serbia too in 2008. The recession is not over yet, but better times are in store, Tadic pointed out. “2011 will be a difficult and complex year, in which economic and security measures must be taken to maintain social stability and secure better prospects for the future,” he stated. “2011 will be a year in which the economic crisis and other difficulties will be somewhat reduced,” the Serbian president stressed, adding that Serbia needed to hold on for another year. The ceremony was also attended by Serbia's Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, Justice Minister Snezana Malovic, Security-Information Agency (BIA) Director Sasa Vukadinovic, Serbian Army (VS) Chief of the General Staff Colonel General Miloje Miletic, Police Director MIlorad Veljovic, foreign diplomats, state and prosecution officials and church dignitaries. On November 12, 1839 the first Military Law defining army security was adopted in Serbia and the VBA celebrates this date as its day.
