Serbia’s relations with the EU and the U.S. have passed a historical turning point, said U.S. professor and NATO and EU expert Charles Kupchan. Kupchan has assessed that “key event for this change of course was resolution of the UN General Assembly,” daily Politika writes. “Serbia-EU, U.S. relations at turning point” The Georgetown University professor explains that the reason for that is the fact that the Serbian authorities for the first time since the conflict in Kosovo did not confront with anyone but committed to a higher goal – the EU accession. Kupchan however pointed out that it did not mean that the issue of Kosovo would be quickly solved but that the EU entry “has become Serbia’s top priority and that it is possible to find a solution for Kosovo”. “Dialogue between the U.S., EU, Serbia and Kosovo will direct the conflict toward the solution,” he added. The American expert also said that the fall of the interim Kosovo government had delayed the process because without the government there could be no serious talks between Belgrade and Pristina which were only a matter of time. Kupchan thinks that Pristina, regardless of what the next government would be like, will have a constructive conversation with Belgrade and that it will be interested in reaching a final solution.
